Each year, queens and princess are appointed by the Kansas Hereford Women at the annual meeting in December. Her reign will begin immediately following the meeting and will last until the next meeting, unless the queen chooses to run for National Hereford Queen.
In that situation, her reign will end with the National appointment in October. However, she is still asked to come back for the crowning of the new queen in December and to give the queen’s report.
Activities for queen should include sales, the Kansas Junior Hereford XTRA, KJHA meetings, the Junior National Hereford Expo, the KHA tour, the Kansas State Fair, the Kansas Junior Livestock Show and the American Royal if the queen should choose to run for National Hereford Queen. Queens may choose to attend the State Fair or the Junior Livestock Show if she is unable to make both.
Royalty will be responsible for handing out ribbons at each show attended. They are also expected to maintain this blog and a Facebook page detailing their activities throughout the year. Queens are asked to submit an article to each issue of the Hereford Headliner.
An official dress code is required for queens at JNHE and the American Royal. While it is preferred that queens follow this dress code in all situations, due to showing and travel constraints, it is not required at all events.
It is recommended that all queens, and preferably princesses as well, complete the Master’s of Beef Advocacy program, as it is required to run for National Queen.
Queens must be within the ages of 16 and 21 and princesses must be within the ages of 14 and 16.
For more information, please contact the current royalty at kansasherefordroyalty@hotmail.com or the queen committee, Paula Acheson and Michelle Beran.
